SMART Goal Setting

Most people are familiar with SMART goal setting within a business environment.

  • S - Specific
  • M - Measurable
  • A - Achievable
  • R - Realistic
  • T - Time Measured

Objectives, targets and goals are generally all set using these criteria.

SMART goal setting is also a key element in Life coaching sessions. Together with recognised coaching models, I will take these criteria and set them against the goals you want to achieve in other areas of your life. This enables you to make effective use of your time and see tangible evidence of your progress.

For example:
  • Specific: What goal do you want to achieve?
  • Measurable: How will you know when you have achieved it?
  • Achievable: What do you need to achieve this?
  • Realistic: What obstacles may need to be overcome?
  • Time Measured: When can you do that by?


Quite often progress is broken down into small steps, each following the SMART criteria. With my complete support, you set each goal, however small to start with.

As each step is achieved, another perhaps slightly larger goal is set - constantly moving you towards the final goal.




In my experience, when a client commits to achieve a goal, they quite often surpass their commitment each time. They progress in leaps and bounds as their success in achieving each step increases their motivation and self-confidence.

The change or improvement process happens much faster when they commit to each goal they set themselves.
