Positive Steps for Goal Setting
Goal setting is crucial when initiating change in any area of your life. Taking these positive steps ensures you stay focused on achieving your dreams:
1. Be Passionate
Your aims must be personal to you. You must be passionate about them or you won’t achieve them. Live it, breathe it, make it your “Magnificent Obsession”
2. Use Present Tense
Always use the present tense. You can effect subconscious change only by communicating in the language your subconscious understands – the present tense.
Your subconscious mind cannot distinguish between truth and fantasy, right or wrong. It just accepts what you tell it as the truth and reality. Therefore, feed your mind that what you desire already exists. This will heighten your awareness to opportunities around you that are consistent with what you wish to achieve.
3. Use Positive Language
DON’T say – “will”, “want”, “lose” or “give up”
SAY “am”, “do”
4. Write it down
It is generally accepted that in order to make your goals effective, you must write them down. Enter them in a personal journal which you can revisit to assess your progress. Always check why you want each one and that they support your core values.
5. Use a Goal Card
Write a summary of each aim on a card and read them every morning and every evening, thereby creating a habit.
6. Review your progress
Review your progress regularly and put in the necessary actions to ensure your progress stays on track.
7. Reward Yourself
It is extremely important to reward yourself in some way for each step achieved. Check back regularly in your journal to see how far you have progressed. This often helps at times when motivation levels drop. Where would you still be if you hadn't progressed this far? You deserve to acknowledge your achievements.
